Field guide: Commissioning & handover

Is the building ready for people and operations?

Overview · What & why

A decision, before a calculation.

Physical completion is only part of readiness. Commissioning checks that systems perform as intended and that the operator can use them. Occupancy authorization, life-safety checks and other required approvals depend on local authorities. Handover also transfers drawings, warranties, manuals, training and unresolved items to the people who will run the building.

A concrete example

Alex leads the commissioning team through equipment tests and integrated systems testing. Facilities operators rehearse alarms, transitions and recovery procedures before enterprise workloads depend on the building. Unresolved failures remain on the issues register. Regulatory permissions, facilities acceptance and IT service readiness are separate gates that must align.

What to remember

The next stage relies on readiness checklist with evidence, while related workstreams may continue in parallel.
